The In's and Out's of a True Study
Throughout life we hear of many
different “facts” and “opinions”. From the playground when we were young to the
workplace all the way to the local bars. Things like if you drink caffeine, it
will give your kids autism to the importance of the different levels and types
of sleep. As we hear these “facts” how we know what is true and what is false. Some would say to read and believe scientific
studies. If it is researched and published that is fact and everything else is
false. Studies are very thorough. And precise. People conducting research spend
years going through the scientific process to make sure they are as accurate as
possible.
A big
problem that’s hard to get rid of completely is something called biases. Biases
is simply where someone’s beliefs in politics, religion, and cultural stance
gets in the way and affects the research and becomes one sided. Everyone on
this earth has a moral compass and this always comes into play when conducting
research. Most of the time researchers conduct studies that is important. When
conducting this research, they have a hidden agenda and have a hope for the
results they are conducting.
Another
big part of research and studies is its very difficult to incorporate all
perspectives and be completely accurate. In a study they deal worth different
variables and changing the variables can influence the results. If done
correctly you can change the variables so that your results match the results
you are looking for. For example, you are conducting a study about how homosexual
parents impact on their kids compared to Heterosexual families. Simply meaning
are the kids of homosexual parents have the same possibility for success as
heterosexual parents. As you conduct the research you have two different groups
to compare and study. One is the homosexual group, and you take a couple and
study and research the kids and what happens to them. For the heterosexual
group you study a single mother who is heterosexual but isn’t married or has a significant
other present. As you conduct the study you find that they are the same and there
isn’t any difference in the groups. So, your results are that both heterosexual
and homosexual groups are the same. But as we look at other studies, we find
that children of a single parent household are at a significant lower advantage
as a normal household. As we look at these two studies, we find that the first
one changed the variable from families with both a mother and a father to just
a single parent this changing the outcome of the study. But according to what
they did study both homosexual and heterosexual parents are the same. That is
why it is extremely important to not just look at the conclusion of any
research or finding of a study.
As we
look at the whole study we can learn if this study is truly what it claims it
is. Like understanding anything in life looking over the whole picture will
give us better understanding to what we are trying to learn. As we do this, we
will be able to weave through the studies that are factual and the studies that
are one sided. As well this can help us in all aspects of life not just
research but the things, we hear both on the playground, in the workplace, and
at our local bars. Another huge prophet for doing this as well is we can really
understand what is best for us. We won’t have to keep trying all the fads that
come and go throughout time because we can see what truly helps us. As well to
finish with a little joke. There was once a study done that showed that 95% of
all studies are false.
